The cultural phenomenon of Rock Camp has gathered an impressive collection of rock-star “counselors,” including Roger Daltrey, Alice Cooper, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, Nancy Wilson, Joe Perry, Jeff Beck, and Slash, among other legends. The musicians teach, inspire, and jam with campers over the course of four days, concluding with a live performance at a famed venue. The camp brings together musicians from all walks of life for an unforgettable and transformative experience with legendary rock stars. Founded by music producer David Fishof, Rock ‘N’ Roll Fantasy Camp has found a home in Los Angeles, New York, and other cities for more than twenty-five years.

The next camp is scheduled for March 5-8. “You can’t put a price on dreams,” he says. But Province insists he more than got his money's worth. A week with all the trimmings (tuition, room and board, travel, etc.) costs upwards of $10,000. Province says Neil Schon (Journey), Tommy Shaw (Styx), Dave Navarro (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Carmine Appice (Beck, Bogert & Appice) have dropped by during sessions.Ī word of warning: These programs are not cheap. Famous rockers show up – sometimes unannounced - and sit in. Not surprisingly the age group, between 35-55, is mostly male.Īt the end of the week, campers get a chance to perform their band's songs live, often at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay. It’s hard work, but very rewarding.”įishof says much of his business is as repeats and gifts. You spend a week bonding with this group of people. A lapsed drummer and closet guitarist (his collection includes 35 axes), Province considers himself mainly a singer. After that he was hooked, attending others in New York, Dallas and Las Vegas. The first, in 2006 in Los Angeles, was a gift from his two daughters. Province has been to the camp four times now. “They all have varying degrees of talent. When asked if campers ever surprise him with their musical abilities, Daltrey laughs affectionately. It might be their fantasy, but it doesn't matter.” Some people say, 'What are you doing that for - it's so low life?' It's not! These are real people, with real dreams.
I enjoy it, feel incredibly comfortable there. “The camp helps raise money for Teen Cancer America. “David is extremely generous,” continues Daltrey. “It reminds me of what I was like when I made my first guitar and started mucking around, playing and singing songs, thinking I was Elvis Presley. “While the campers are here, THEY are the rock stars, and we treat them that way.”ĭaltrey, now 70, says he gets as much from the experience as the campers. ”We have one important rule,” says Fishof, author of Rock Your Business (BenBella Books, 2012). The campers come from all walks of life – lawyers, doctors, firemen, teachers, stock brokers - and need no previous musical experience.
There are even late-night jam sessions for insomniacs. Interspersed throughout the week also are optional workshops and seminars given by music pros focusing on different instruments. The bands then break off individually and rehearse three or four chosen tunes. “To this day, I get emotional when I remember Roger Daltrey singing Behind Blue Eyes to the firefighters and first responders there.”

When he saw the band again, it was on TV as part of the 9/11 Concert for New York City tribute in 2001. “I was at the very top, and they were no bigger than ants," laughs Province, now 55. In 1981, Province first saw The Who live in concert at the Cotton Bowl in Texas. By day, he is managing director of a financial advisor company in Oklahoma City. Mark Province is not a musician by profession – far from it. Since the camp opened in 1997, Daltrey has appeared several times, donating his proceeds to TCA. Here, the singer talks about the Rock’n’Roll Fantasy Camp, an outfit headquartered in Las Vegas which allows regular folks a chance to perform with bona fide rock stars.
